How lawn mowing and yard maintenance businesses usually bill
- Per visit, based on lot size and how long the mow takes
- Flat monthly rate for the season, the same amount each month regardless of growth
- Seasonal contract for a set number of mows and treatment rounds, paid monthly or up front
- Per application for fertilizer, weed control, aeration and overseeding
- Hourly for one-time cleanups, plus disposal fees by the load or bag
Payment terms
Lawn care runs on small, frequent bills, so most companies invoice monthly for all visits in that month, or bill at the start of the month on a flat seasonal plan. Due on receipt or Net 10 keeps balances from piling up across a route of dozens of clients. Keeping a card on file and charging after each month closes is common. For seasonal contracts paid in full up front, some companies offer a small discount. Stop service on accounts that fall more than one cycle behind and state that policy in your service agreement and on the invoice.

Common mistakes on lawn care invoices
- Billing a month of mows without visit dates, so clients dispute visits skipped for rain
- Absorbing fuel and dump costs that the service agreement allowed you to pass on
- Letting small unpaid balances roll over for months on long routes
- Not noting product names or treatment rounds, which matters when clients ask what was applied
Lawn Care invoice questions
How do I invoice for weekly lawn mowing?
Most lawn businesses send one invoice per month that lists each visit date and the per-visit price, or a flat monthly amount if the client is on a seasonal plan. Add treatments and extras as separate lines.
Do you charge sales tax on lawn care?
Some states tax lawn and landscape maintenance services and others do not. Fertilizer or products sold separately can also be treated differently. Check with your state revenue department before adding tax.
Should I charge for visits skipped because of rain?
On a per-visit plan, bill only completed visits. On a flat monthly plan, the price is usually the same every month, and the agreement should say so. Either way, state the policy in writing before the season starts.
Is a fuel surcharge on a lawn care invoice allowed?
You can charge one if the client agreed to it, ideally in the service agreement. Show it as a separate line with a clear label so it does not look like a hidden fee.
