How carpenters and finish carpenters usually bill

  • Hourly labor for repairs, framing fixes and small jobs
  • Per linear foot for trim, baseboard and crown molding
  • Fixed price for decks, built-ins and cabinets, with a deposit for materials
  • Lumber and hardware at cost plus a markup

Payment terms

For custom work like built-ins or decks, carpenters usually ask for a deposit that covers materials before cutting anything, since the work is made to fit one home. The balance is due at install or completion. Small repair jobs billed by the hour are often paid on the day. If you work as a sub for a general contractor, expect the GC's terms, often Net 30. Some states limit home improvement deposits, so check before setting one. Send the final invoice right after the walkthrough and list anything excluded so it does not turn into a dispute.

Common mistakes on carpentry invoices

  • Not billing shop time for pieces built off site
  • Leaving out exclusions like paint or stain, then being asked to finish the work for free
  • Underestimating lumber waste on trim and not billing for the extra stock
  • Forgetting to deduct the deposit on the final invoice

Carpentry invoice questions

How do carpenters charge for trim work?

Many price trim by the linear foot, with a higher rate for crown molding or complex profiles. Materials are listed separately or included, depending on what the estimate said.

Should a carpentry invoice list lumber separately?

It helps. Listing lumber and sheet goods by type shows the client where the money went, especially when they chose hardwood or a premium grade. Some carpenters mark lumber up to cover pickup and waste.

How much deposit should a carpenter take for built-ins?

Enough to cover materials is common, because the work is custom and cannot be reused. Some states limit home improvement deposits, so check your state rules before you set an amount.

Do I charge sales tax on carpentry work?

Tax rules differ by state. Some tax materials only, some tax the whole job, and some exempt work that becomes part of the house. Ask your state revenue department. The tax line here is only an example.
